Three IDP youths arrested at Rathedaung Twsp security checkpoint

Three youths from Pyilone Chanthar camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Arakan State’s Rathedaung Township were arrested at Pauk Taw Pyin security checkpoint on the Rathedaung-Ponnagyun road on Monday. 

The detainees have been identified as Maung Maung Nyo, 17, from Kyauktan village, Maung Aung Myo Khant, 15, from Kharu Chaung village, and Maung Nay Htet Oo, 18, from Hlainggwin village. 

“The three of them left the displacement camp at around 1 p.m. yesterday on a motorcycle to visit their friends in Ponnagyun,” said Ko Maung Hsan Zaw, the uncle of detainee Maung Maung Nyo. “I received a phone call in the evening that three youths were detained at Pauk Taw Pyin security checkpoint. Junta soldiers are deployed at the security checkpoint.” 

Where the three youths were taken is still unknown, and their families are concerned for their safety. 

“Parents of the detained youths went to the police station to file a complaint. Family members are worried about the safety of the three youths because the whereabouts of the detainees are still unknown. The parents of the detained youths want their children released as soon as possible,” he added. 

DMG attempted to contact Arakan State Security and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Kyaw Thura concerning the arrest of the three youths, but he could not be reached. 

On May 4, the Myanmar military arrested U Rawbi, administrator of Bawdupa village, and U Tun Hla Sein, administrator of Kyet Kaing Tan village, in Sittwe Township, and the pair hasn’t been seen or heard from since then, according to family members.
