AA attacks another Mrauk-U police station in pre-dawn raid

Fighting between regime forces and the Arakan Army (AA) intensified after the ethnic armed group launched an attack on the Myaungbwe police station in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan State, on Thursday morning, according to locals.

About 70 junta soldiers and policemen have reportedly been stationed at Myaungbwe police station, near the Sittwe-Yangon road.

“The fighting was fierce as the AA carried out a pre-dawn attack on Myaungbwe police station. We heard the sounds of small arms fire for three hours,” said a local resident in Myaungbwe Village.

Fierce clashes were reported as regime forces on Mount Kyein Taung in Minbya Township responded to the AA’s offensive with artillery attacks. 

The hostilities forced hundreds of local people in Myaungbwe Village to flee to safer locations.

“Residents were afraid of the fighting, which occurred early in the morning on December 28. Most locals in the village fled their homes this morning and a few residents remain in the village,” said another local man in Myaungbwe Village.

The Arakan Army seized the district police station in Mrauk-U at about 9 p.m. on December 26.

Since renewed clashes began on November 13, fighting has continued to escalate in Arakan State and has spread to 14 of the state’s 17 townships.
