BGF police officer accused of attempted rape

A member of the Border Guard Police attempted to rape a woman who was searching for her cow in a village in Northern Maungdaw on May 11, according to a relevant village administrator.

The BGF police officer tried to rape her near a lake between South and West Kyee Kan Pyin villages at noon on Saturday, said U Zaw Phyo Tun, administrator for Aung Zeya village, north of Maungdaw town.

A villager who was returning home after catching crabs informed the village administrator when he saw the BGF policeman, named Pyae Phyo Win, push the woman into the lake and then attempted to rape her, the village administrator said.

“When the villager that witnessed the occurrence reported it to us, we asked the police constable peacefully what he did. He has now filed a complaint towards the Pyin Phyu police station,” he said.

Whether he committed rape or not depends on the medical results, he added.

The police constable is from Ngan Chaung BGF outpost and he arrived in the village to attend a training program in Kyee Kan Pyin headquarters.

“We detained the accused officer at the police station and opened a case against him for attempted rape,” said police captain Kyaw Mya Win from Pyin Phyu police station.

Aung Zeya village is a multi-ethnic village that includes Rakhine, Bama, Shan, Thet and Mon people. The village is comprised of 60 houses with over 300 people.
