Success at trial shrimp hatchery in Kyauktaw Twsp breeds plans for more
The initial trial of a freshwater shrimp hatchery in Arakan State was a resounding success, said the state’s Department of Fisheries, with preparations being made to proceed with more freshwater shrimp breeding in the coming year.

The initial trial of a freshwater shrimp hatchery in Arakan State was a resounding success, said the state’s Department of Fisheries, with preparations being made to proceed with more freshwater shrimp breeding in the coming year.
The hatchery in Kyaukphyu Township successfully hatched 1.2 million shrimps, said U Thet Oo, director of the department.
“We will proceed to establish a shrimp hatchery for a second time in Ponnagyun Township as the first trial hatchery was successful,” U Thet Oo told DMG.
The department said more than K500 million from the state’s budget will be spent for the freshwater shrimp hatchery due to be opened in Ponnagyun Township.
The freshwater shrimp that are bred in Arakan State will be exported to other states and regions, the department said.
It takes about two months for hatchery shrimp to reach a size that can be sold at market.
“We do not sell shrimp now. We will breed them so they do not become extinct in the state,” U Thet Oo said.
“We hatched them using technology and they were not hatched naturally,” he added.
Arakan State also has saltwater shrimp hatcheries in Kyaukphyu, Pauktaw and Sittwe townships.
