Clashes are intensifying between regime forces and the Kachin Independence Army KIA in Lonekhin Village, Hpakant Township, Kachin State, according to local sources.
Residents reported that fierce fighting has continued in and around Lonekhin Village since the morning of May 4, with gunfire still ongoing.
“I can still hear continuous gunfire. They are firing at very close range. Some people have fled for safety, while others remain. I can also hear aircraft,” a male resident of Lonekhin Village said.
Due to the intensity of the fighting, some residents have fled their homes, while others remain trapped inside the village.
Regime troops reportedly fired heavy artillery on May 4, with shells landing in residential areas and injuring civilians.
“Yesterday, a battle broke out near the Lonekhin golf course. There were injuries caused by heavy artillery. Right now, I do not dare to go outside, so I do not know what is happening,” another local man said.
Regime forces have also reportedly arrested several residents in Hpakant Township and reinforced their positions in Lonekhin and Hmaw Si Zar villages.
On April 30, local social assistance groups discovered four bodies at the old Lonekhin hospital site, where intense fighting is currently taking place.
