Cattle are dying of an unknown ailment across some 10 villages in Arakan State’s Myebon Township, according to local residents, who say the deaths began last week.

Cattle are dying of an unknown ailment across some 10 villages in Arakan State’s Myebon Township, according to local residents, who say the deaths began last week.
“Symptoms include nasal discharge and bleeding from the anus. In some cases, pustules appear on their body,” said U Thein Tun, the administrator of Pinkaptaungmaw Village. “The cows die around one week after they develop symptoms. Villagers don’t know what disease it is.”
Five to 10 cows have died in each affected village since the outbreak.
Ko Oo Tin Win from Kankaw Chaung Village said: “Cattle have only suffered from foot-and-mouth disease in our villages. Cows have discharge from the mouth and nose, and some have pustules similar to those of small-pox. We want vets to come over and check. We don’t know what disease it is.”
Villagers said they would report to the livestock department if there are more fatalities among their cattle.
Mysterious illnesses also claimed the lives of cattle in some Manaung Township villages in 2020 and 2021.
