Many residents of Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township have been without electricity since Friday night after erosion brought down a power pole near Ohntaw village, according to locals.

Many residents of Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township have been without electricity since Friday night after erosion brought down a power pole near Ohntaw village, according to locals.
The power pole, located near a creek in Ohntaw village, fell amid pouring rain on Friday evening, resulting in a power outage since 10 p.m., said resident U Poe San.
“We haven’t been told yet by the township electricity office about when electricity will be restored,” he told DMG.
On Saturday, officials from the township electricity office visited the site and looked for an appropriate place to erect a new power pole, said Ohntaw villager Ko Tun Saw.
“Staff from the electricity office are negotiating prices with [local resident] U Aung Soe Nu to set up a new power pole on his farm,” he said.
DMG’s calls to the Kyaukphyu District electricity office chief, U Thein Soe, went unanswered on Saturday.
The Facebook page of the Kyaukphyu Township electricity office said it would take some time before the local electricity supply is restored.
