Mrauk-U teen goes missing after boat sinks in Laymyo River
A teenage girl went missing after a boat sank in the Laymyo River in Arakan State at around 9 a.m. on December 25, according to local residents.

A teenage girl went missing after a boat sank in the Laymyo River in Arakan State at around 9 a.m. on December 25, according to local residents.
The 16-year-old has been identified as Ma Aye Aye Nwe, a resident of Ale Zay Ward in Mrauk-U. The boat she was riding in sank near Myetyeikkyun Village while she was on a trip with friends, said Ko Saw Myat, a boat operator.
“They went on a picnic. The boat operator didn’t know how to drive very well, so the boat sank near that village. Nothing happened to the other people, but she went missing. Local people are currently searching for her,” he explained.
Local villagers are currently searching for Ma Aye Aye Nwe, but they have not found her yet, Ko Saw Myat added.
“There were three young men and six women [and girls] on the boat. She has not been found yet. It was high tide when the boat sank, so we don’t know where she drifted,” he said.
U Than Shwe Hlaing, an IDP in his 40s from Cedipyin displacement camp in Rathedaung Township, died after his boat sank on December 21. And three family members from Kularbar Village, part of Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township, reportedly drowned on December 22.
