A man was killed after a water tanker truck heading to Pi Pin Yin camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Arakan State’s Mrauk-U Township overturned on Monday evening, according to IDPs.
The 30-year-old man has been identified as U Than Aye Maung from Waithali Village in Mrauk-U Township. He died in Pi Pin Yin Village when his vehicle became stuck in mud.
The earthen roads in the area were soft due the heavy rains that accompanied Cyclone Mocha, and the vehicle overturned as a result, said U Thein Kyaw Mya, an IDP from Pi Pin Yin displacement camp.
People In Need (PIN), a local charity, has been donating drinking water to displacement camps in Mrauk-U since April. The overturned vehicle was carrying drinking water donated by PIN.
Out of 251 shelters at the Pi Pin Yin IDP camp, some 200 were destroyed by Cyclone Mocha, which made landfall over Arakan State on May 14.
Storm victims in Arakan State are in need of shelters, food, medicine and drinking water, according to humanitarian aid groups.
