The sixth anniversary of Mro National Day was observed at a monastery in 3rd-Mile village, Maungdaw Township, on the morning of May 6, with celebrants gathering to preserve the traditional culture of the ethnic group and unite Mro people living across Arakan State.
The Mro National Day commemoration was led by the leaders of the Mro Ethnic Literature and Culture Association, leaders of Mro political parties and Mro Buddhist monks, according to the event organisers.
“It is a special day for the Mro people. The ceremony was held to preserve the traditional culture and mother tongue; to preserve the Mro people,” U Zani Phyu, chairman of the Mro Ethnic Literature and Culture Association, told DMG.
The timing recognises the Mro people’s upland rice planting season, with Mro National Day celebrated annually on the 7th Waxing of Kason in the Myanmar era.
“The Mro people depend on the farms for their livelihood. At this time, the planting time is set and the ceremony is marked as it is a Mro livelihood,” U Zani Phyu explained.
Most of Arakan State’s Mro people live in Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships.
