Since the coastal area in Arakan State is prone to natural disasters every year, a state level workshop has been convened to make preparations and to raise public awareness with the aim to minimize damage that can be caused by natural disasters.
The two-day workshop was held with local departmental officials and international organizations including International Organisation for Migration (IOM) at Sittwe’s Min Thuria hall on 11 and 12 July.
Previously, various natural disasters hit in Arakan State and they devastated people’s lives and property. In order to reduce the potential risks of disasters, the meeting was held under the instruction of the proper ministries, the IOM’s National Programme officer Daw Aye Theint Thu said.
“We are discussing ways to prepare in advance for natural disasters rather than responding to them once they occur,” she said.
Recently, floods occurred in Mrauk-U and Minbya Townships and forced local residents and IDPs along the Lay Myo River to flee to safety.
