Two fishermen die after boat capsizes in Pauktaw Twsp

Two fishermen from Kyauk Moung village in Pauktaw Township were killed as strong winds buffeted Arakan State on May 21, according to locals. 

The deceased have been identified as Ko Nge Maung Chay, 28, and Ko Nu Sein Aun, 25. Ko Maung Than Win, a resident of Kyauk Moung village, told DMG that the two died when their boat capsized at around 5 p.m. on May 21. 

“The two men died when their boat capsized in strong winds while fishing in the river east of the village. The bodies were found on the morning of May 22 and buried at the village cemetery in the evening,” he said. 

Similarly, a motorboat plying a route between Ngapathone village in Kyaukphyu Township and Myebon town sank due to strong winds, though no one was injured, village administrator U Aung Baw Gyi told DMG. 

“The boat bound for Ngapathone village in Myebon Township sank near Pyin Phyu Chaung village in Kyaukphyu Township. I think the boat, carrying about 20 people, hit the rocks because of the waves, but no one was injured,” the village administrator said. 

Coastal fishermen in Arakan State have often faced injury and death in the face of strong monsoon winds and rain. 

Some makeshift tents at displacement camps in Mrauk-U, Ponnagyun, Buthidaung and Rathedaung townships were badly damaged by strong winds that swept through Arakan State on May 21.
