At least six houses in Dawei Township’s Pakaryi village were destroyed by artillery shells fired by the Myanmar military on May 4, according to locals.
The military fired more than 10 artillery shells at Pakaryi village in southeastern Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region late on Wednesday evening, hitting the roofs of some houses, said a villager.
“Six houses were hit by artillery fire, but no one was injured,” the villager added.
As a result of the shelling, more than 1,000 residents of the village fled to safer locations.
The displaced villagers are in need of shelter and food, said a member of a relief group helping internally displaced people (IDPs).
“The villagers are fleeing in fear, creating food and shelter shortages. We are helping the IDPs as much as we can,” the aid worker added.
Simmering tensions between the Myanmar military and Brigade 4 of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the armed wing of Karen National Union (KNU), erupted into active hostilities after a police outpost near Pakaryi village was attacked by a coalition of anti-regime forces on April 24.
