Junta artillery strike kills man, injures three others in Maungdaw Twsp

A junta artillery strike killed a local man and injured three others in Ahtet Kanthayar Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, on Monday, according to local residents.

An artillery shell fired by the No. 5 Border Guard Force based in Maungdaw fell and exploded in Ahtet Kanthayar Village at around 8 p.m. on April 15, villagers said.

“A mortar shell hit a home directly and some shells landed in nearby villages. Locals dare not go outside because the regime forces consistently fire mortar shells into the residential areas,” said a local woman.

The deceased has been identified as U Kyan Maung Sein aka Tha Maung Sein, 38, and the injured are Ko Myo Lwin, 17, U Maung Maung Thein, 47, and Ma Thandar Htay, 17.

The mortar shell hit the home of U Kyan Maung Sein, who sustained shrapnel wounds to his head and was pronounced dead on the spot.

“We can’t sleep at night and have to hide ourselves in bomb shelters due to the junta artillery strikes. The sound of heavy weapons is very loud,” said a local woman in Maungdaw.

A junta airstrike on Theintaung Village, Buthidaung Township, killed Mamouk Tusaung, a 30-year-old local man, on April 14.

Residents and military observers say that the regime is deliberately targeting civilian villages with heavy artillery and airstrikes.
