The Chin National Front / Chin National Army (CNF/CNA) has announced the implementation of a mandatory military service law aimed at strengthening territorial control in Chin State.
The announcement was made by CNF leader Colonel Solomon during an online fundraising program hosted by Chinlung Media on March 12.
According to the leadership, Chin youth will be required to serve a minimum of three years. The recruitment drive is intended to reinforce territorial security and prevent recently captured areas in Chin State from being retaken by enemy forces.
“This conscription system is not a decision made by the CNF alone. It was implemented with the consensus of more than 20 Chin revolutionary organizations, including members of the Chin State Government (CC). This is due to urgent military needs, and every Chin youth bears this responsibility,” Colonel Solomon said.
The mandatory service program reportedly began in late February, starting in villages in Thantlang Township in northern Chin State.
The CNF leader also warned that individuals who flee to avoid service will be considered “lifelong debtors to the nation” and may face measures that could lead to social discrimination and public shame.
He added that those who evade the military service law would be barred from employment opportunities once the country stabilizes.
Regarding the conscription, a Chin youth told DMG that recruitment in CNA/CNF-controlled areas is important due to the strategic nature of the region.
“Recruitment in areas led by the CNA/CNF is vital as these are strategically important regions. We need manpower and weapons to protect our communities from external threats during this critical time. However, authorities should consult with local communities to establish clear policies on age limits, service duration, and benefits for the families of those who serve,” he said.
He added that without clear policies, Chin youth could lose educational opportunities and families who depend on them for their livelihoods could face severe hardships.
The Chin National Front was established in March 1988 to fight for the liberation of Chin State and is currently active in northern townships including Thantlang, Hakha and Tonzang.
Meanwhile, the Chin Brotherhood (CB) maintains control over several areas in southern Chin State, including Matupi, Kanpetlet, Mindat, Kyindwe and Falam.
