Heavy fighting has broken out along the Ann-Padan Road after military junta troops launched an operation from Ngaphe Township in Magway Region to reinforce the Nat Yay Kan tactical base, according to military sources.

The operation targeted the Nat Yay Kan base, the last remaining junta outpost on the Arakan Yoma mountain range.

Military sources said junta forces launched artillery attacks and airstrikes on Wednesday morning in an attempt to clear routes used by the advancing column.

"Fierce fighting broke out as the junta column tried to advance," a military source said. "Heavy artillery fire and airstrikes continued throughout the morning."

The Nat Yay Kan base is regarded as a strategically important position on the Arakan Yoma range and has been the focus of repeated attempts by the junta to send reinforcements.

Previous reinforcement efforts were reportedly repelled by the Arakan Army and allied forces.

Residents in Ngaphe Township said fighting continued on Thursday, with junta forces relying on air support and artillery fire during the operation.

"At least five fighter jets carried out several bombing runs," a local resident said. "Artillery shelling has continued since the airstrikes began, and the fighting appears to be intense."

The latest clashes follow a failed reinforcement attempt in late May, when a junta convoy carrying about 150 troops was forced to retreat after being intercepted by resistance forces along the Gotegyi route.

Military observers said the junta is continuing efforts to hold the Nat Yay Kan base because of its strategic importance.

Meanwhile, the Arakan Army and allied forces have maintained pressure on the junta base and surrounding supply routes, keeping the area an active conflict zone.
