CPA, allied forces launch counteroffensive in southern Chin State

The Chin People’s Army (CPA) and allied forces have repelled a junta offensive in Mindat and Kanpetlet townships in southern Chin State and are now launching counteroffensives, according to a statement released by the Chin People’s Union (CPU) on August 1.

The CPU said several junta officers, including Battalion Commander Major Kyaw Hsat, were killed and many others were injured during the fighting.

Since mid-May, the junta has deployed thousands of troops in an offensive targeting Mindat and Kanpetlet townships, where anti-regime forces have been defending their positions.

During the fighting, the CPA, the Chin Brotherhood (CB), Yaw resistance forces, including the Yaw Army and Yaw Defence Force, the Arakan Army, and other allied revolutionary groups have resisted the offensive while launching counterattacks against temporary junta positions.

According to the CPU, allied forces seized weapons, ammunition, drones, jammers, and other military equipment from junta troops, and captured several prisoners of war.

The CPU also alleged that junta troops seized two 70-year-old civilians from the Yaw region and used them as human shields during their advance. Allied forces rescued one of the civilians and returned the individual safely to their family.

The statement further alleged that regime troops retaliated against local residents by burning villages, detaining civilians, and carrying out torture and extrajudicial killings.

Despite advancing along the Laungshay-Saw Road with large troop deployments, junta forces reportedly suffered heavy casualties and retreated in the face of strong resistance from allied revolutionary forces.

The CPU said the regime also attempted to reinforce its troops through the Pauk-Kyaukhtu-Htilin Road, but those efforts were blocked by ambushes on multiple fronts, forcing junta troops to withdraw after sustaining further casualties.

According to the CPU, junta forces have carried out more than 600 airstrikes on CPU-controlled areas since mid-May 2026.

The CPU and CPA expressed gratitude to allied revolutionary forces fighting alongside them and thanked the public for its continued support. The statement also paid tribute to fighters who were killed or injured during the fighting.
