Ponnagyun man injured by Myanmar Navy shooting

A civilian from Nat Seik Village in Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township was seriously injured when the Myanmar Navy shot at him Friday.

U Win Yin, 51, was shot by a Navy warship as he was bringing some family members from Sittwe to Ponnagyun by boat.

“The bullet penetrated from his right back. He is receiving treatment at Ponnagyun Hospital. He is in critical condition,” said one of his family members. Family members are planning to send him to Sittwe People’s Hospital.

Renewed fighting broke out between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) on Monday. The AA has seized a few junta border guard police outposts and police stations.

At least 20 civilians were killed or injured in Pauktaw on Thursday when junta helicopters strafed, and junta warships bombarded the town following AA’s seizure of the township police station. The actual number of civilian casualties is likely higher.

The regime is carrying out war crimes against civilians in Arakan State, said residents.

“The military council is carrying out indiscriminate shooting, which is war crimes against civilians. They have blockaded transportation networks, and shot unarmed civilians, which is totally unacceptable,” said a Ponnagyun resident.

The regime has blockaded all the main roads and waterways in Arakan State since the renewed fighting broke out on Monday, and also bars people from leaving or entering many towns.
