Myanmar’s military regime has launched airstrikes after the Arakan Army successfully captured the strategic Point 666 hilltop camp in Padaung Township of Bago Region on January 28, according to military sources.
The Point 666 hilltop camp, which serves as a forward security outpost for the military’s Defense Industries Factory No. 16, had been under blockade by a coalition force led by the Arakan Army since October. The blockade cut off food and ammunition supplies to the base before it was seized on the evening of January 28.
“It is confirmed that the Arakan Army has captured the Point 666 hilltop camp. The regime is currently responding with airstrikes. This base was captured once before, but the Arakan Army had to temporarily withdraw for tactical reasons. Now it has been retaken,” a male military source said.
He added that the military regime attempted to reinforce the base but failed, and that some junta soldiers were captured along with weapons and ammunition.
The Arakan Army first captured the Point 666 camp on October 14, 2025, but later withdrew following a major counteroffensive by the regime.
After the regime regained control of the hilltop, it faced a renewed cut and block strategy by Arakan Army led joint forces. During the siege, the regime reportedly suffered casualties among senior officers, including Colonel Han Lin Aung, commander of Military Operations Command No. 10, and Major Wai Yan Lin, who were killed while attempting to deliver food supplies to the base.
“At present, the Bago front is seeing increased momentum from the Arakan Army and its allies. The regime has heavily fortified the Otshitpin military station for defense. Fighting is expected to intensify further,” said a ground source in the Bago Region.
The Arakan Army and its allies launched their offensive on the Bago front in January 2025 and have since captured at least five junta camps in the area.
Military sources said the regime is reinforcing Defense Industries Factory No. 16 and using it as a base to fire heavy artillery. Padaung Township, where the Arakan Army offensive continues, is home to several key military production facilities, including Defense Industries Factories No. 3, 5, 6, 9 and 16.
