Ngapali man, son shot dead by junta soldiers

A local man and his son from Jeittaw Ward in Ngapali Town, Arakan State, were shot dead on Thursday by junta soldiers retreating from the military’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 55, according to a reliable source.

U Nga Taung Hnyin and his son Ko Kalar were shot dead for refusing to transport junta soldiers on the evening of July 4.

“Junta soldiers forced the two men to transport them to Thabyuchaing naval base by boat. Junta soldiers shot the man to death in his home. They also brought Ko Kalar to a jetty and shot him to death,” said the source.

The junta troops did not allow family members to take the body of Ko Kalar, who was shot dead at the jetty and whose body was left on the shore, according to local residents.

The military has prepared a defence at Jeittaw Ward in Ngapali, and it is reportedly attempting to retreat from LIB No. 55 to the Maung Shwe Lay naval base.

“Junta soldiers retreated from LIB No. 55 and attempted to flee the Thabyuchaing naval base by boat. The military is clashing with the Arakkha Army (AA) fiercely at Jeittaw Ward,” said a local resident of Ngapali.

Retreating junta soldiers reportedly attempted to loot valuables from homes and shops in Jeittaw Ward, according to locals.

The AA has seized the military’s Ngapali-based LIB 566 and has reportedly also taken control of LIB No. 55, with retreating junta soldiers being hunted down by AA fighters.
