A military junta attempt to carry out an amphibious landing on Ngapyi Island in Werathani Township, Arakan State, failed after heavy artillery and drone strikes by the Arakan Army forced the naval landing craft to retreat.
Beginning on the morning of October 7, junta forces launched air and artillery support in an effort to land troops on the Arakan Army-controlled island using naval landing craft.
“As the Arakan Army controls Ngapyi Island, the regime feels its rear flank at Shwe Min Gan Naval Base is insecure,” a military source told DMG. “They attempted an amphibious landing backed by intense air and artillery fire. However, the Arakan Army mounted a coordinated defence, preventing the landing and forcing junta forces to retreat with casualties.”
Situated in the Kaladan River along the shared borders of Sittwe, Ponnagyun, and Werathani townships, Ngapyi Island holds critical strategic value.
The island lies approximately one mile east of the Sittwe based Shwe Min Gan naval facility.
The military regime has deployed at least six warships in the sea off Sittwe and at the mouth of the Kaladan River to exert military pressure on Werathani and Rathedaung townships.
Following their tactical retreat from Ngapyi Island, junta forces conducted heavy aerial bombing raids targeting the island and the nearby Kyein Khway Maw mountain range.
Furthermore, clashes between both sides continue near Wahbo Village and Amyint Kyun Village in Sittwe Township, according to military sources.
“Fighting in Sittwe has been exceptionally intense over recent days,” a local resident from Ponnagyun said. “Yesterday, jet fighters carried out more than ten bombing runs. Heavy artillery and small arms fire can be heard day and night.”
On September 4, the military regime launched an offensive designated Operation 4926 into Ponnagyun Township.
However, the Arakan Army applied strategic defensive and counteroffensive maneuvers, breaking the junta’s momentum and capturing several military outposts in Sittwe Township.
At present, the military regime is deploying reinforcements in Sittwe in renewed attempts to launch amphibious attacks toward Werathani Township.
