The Arakan Lottery, launched by the Central Customs and Taxation Department under the United League of Arakan (ULA), officially began ticket sales on 1 June, though it may take months before tickets are distributed to sales agents.
Currently, lottery tickets can only be purchased at Arakan Lottery branches and relevant district and township tax offices. Sources close to the ULA taxation department said it could take at least two or three months before sales agents are officially appointed.
“At the moment, tickets are not yet being distributed to agents. I understand that agents will be appointed after sales operations become more stable within the next two or three months,” a man close to the ULA taxation department told DMG.
Once appointed, agents will reportedly receive more than 9 percent profit per ticket sold. However, they are prohibited from selling tickets above the official price of K1,000 per ticket.
Many residents in areas controlled by the Arakan Army have welcomed the launch of the Arakan Lottery, with growing public interest in becoming sales agents.
“People are very interested because they see it as supporting their own government. I am also happy that agents will eventually be appointed,” a woman in Kyauktaw Township said.
Some residents, however, suggested that the lottery should offer larger prizes and more winning number options to maintain long-term public interest.
“People can already try their luck through online lotteries like the Thai Lottery, which offers much bigger prizes and more chances to win. The Arakan Lottery should increase its prize allocations and winning options. Otherwise, public interest may not last long,” a young man in Kyaukphyu said.
The Arakan Lottery currently offers a top prize of K50 million, a second prize of K30 million, along with additional prizes of K10 million, K5 million, K2 million, and K1 million, totaling 39 prizes.
Lottery draws will be held on the first day of every month.
According to the ULA, 50 percent of lottery revenue will be distributed as prize money, while the remaining funds will be used for regional development projects in Arakan State, including road and bridge construction, education, and healthcare services.
