Regime detains three local men in Taungup

Three local men were arrested by junta soldiers at a security checkpoint in Taungup, Arakan State, on Sunday.

U Hla Myint, 50, Ko Aung Chan Nyein Tun, 20, and another man were detained at the security checkpoint near the military’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 346 at an entrance to Taungup on August 4.

“They are ordinary people and were arrested at a security checkpoint while going to Khayine Village,” said a source close to the arrestees.

The detainees’ whereabouts and the reason for their arrest remain unknown, the source added.

Myanmar’s military regime has tightened security checkpoints in Taungup Township and has made a series of arrests of civilians in recent days, locals said.

A female schoolteacher, two female nurses and a child from Gyipyin Village in Taungup Township were arrested at the Phone Nyo security checkpoint on July 31.

“Family members have not been able to contact the detainees. The detainees have not been released yet,” said a resident of Taungup.

DMG continues to investigate the condition of those arrested, with the Gyipyin arrestees being held at the military’s LIB No. 544.

Junta soldiers have taken up multiple positions in Taungup and locals are worried about their safety due to the junta artillery attacks into downtown Taungup and nearby areas in recent days.
