The Arakan Army (AA) has been stepping up attacks on the junta’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 552 in Buthidaung Township, Arakan State, the ethnic armed group said in a statement on Sunday.
The AA began an assault on the junta’s LIB 552 on February 24 and the ethnic armed group has continued to attempt to seize the entire regiment, the statement added.
Some regime soldiers who managed to escape from the Guppi police station have been hunted down by AA fighters since March 20, the statement said.
The AA killed 12 regime soldiers and captured about a dozen others with their weapons. Fleeing regime soldiers are being hunted down by the AA, the statement reads.
Fierce fighting has been ongoing in Arakan State since renewed conflict broke out on November 13, with the AA seizing hundreds of military camps and Border Guard Force (BGF) outposts.
The AA has seized large swaths of territory in Rathedaung, Pauktaw, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Myebon and Ramree townships, as well as in neighbouring Paletwa Township, Chin State, since launching an offensive in November of last year.
