Civilian casualties rise in southern Arakan amid relentless junta bombardments

Civilian casualties continue to rise across Taungup, Thandwe, and Gwa townships as the military junta carries out persistent airstrikes and heavy artillery bombardments across southern Arakan State.

On the evening of September 11, two junta fighter jets bombed Ywathitkay Village in Taungup Township, killing 59-year-old U Tin Maung and injuring 67-year-old U Myint Shwe, according to a statement released by the Arakan Army today.

Earlier, on September 10, junta aircraft launched two separate airstrikes on Kyeintali town in Gwa Township, killing 81-year-old U Kyaw Khin and injuring 49-year-old U Chit San Maung.

On September 7, a junta airstrike on Thandwe town killed one woman and injured three other civilians. That same day, junta jets bombed Kyaukkyi and Sabahtar villages in Thandwe Township, destroying eight homes, though no casualties were reported.

In addition to air raids, junta warships operating in the coastal waters off Gwa and Thandwe townships are shelling inland areas, forcing residents to abandon their homes and seek safety.

While launching ground offensives into territory controlled by the Arakan Army from Kyaukphyu and Sittwe townships, the military junta is also attempting naval amphibious landings along the Gwa and Thandwe coastlines.

The intensifying military operations and heavy bombardments have left local populations facing severe danger and widespread displacement.

During August alone, junta airstrikes and artillery shelling in Thandwe and Gwa townships killed or injured at least 79 civilians.
