The Arakan Army (AA) is launching attacks on military camps and junta outposts including the Tawhein tactical command base near Kazukaing Village, part of Arakan State’s Ann Township, the ethnic armed group said in a statement on Wednesday.
Locals said these military camps have been a threat to local populations for the past two months amid the latest fighting in Arakan State.
“Civilian casualties were reported due to artillery shells fired by the junta troops stationed on Mt. Tawhein. The regime soldiers fire heavy weapons whenever they clash with the AA. Local people are also afraid of losing their lives,” said an Ann Township resident.
Fierce fighting followed the AA’s launching of assaults on multiple junta bases and military camps in Ann Township, where the military’s Western Command headquarters is located, on March 24.
The AA statement said at least four regime soldiers were killed in a clash with AA troops near a mountain range west of Lone Village in Ann Township on March 31, with the fighting lasting for an hour.
“We hear the sounds of heavy weapons on a daily basis. Local residents live in fear,” said another Ann resident.
Ann Township is home to the military’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos. 371, 372 and 373, engineering battalions, medical corps and supply and transport battalions.
The AA has announced that the ethnic armed group is attacking military camps in Arakan State one after another, day after day.
