Women’s activist arrested in Thandwe

Family members have expressed concern for the safety of a woman from Thandwe Township who was abducted by Myanmar’s military regime two days ago.

Ma May Thazin, 29, from Bauk Taung Village was arrested at a military checkpoint near Yaung Chi Oo Village on Sunday as she was returning to her village after shopping in Thandwe. Her whereabouts are still unknown, said family members.

“We are concerned for her safety. I hope she will be released right after the investigation,” said a family member.

The exact reason for the arrest of Ma May Thazin is still unclear. But many guess that she was arrested because she is a known women’s rights activist in Thandwe.

“The regime has been tailing her for a long time. She has been under suspicion,” said a fellow women’s rights activist in Thandwe.

Junta arrests of civilians in southern Arakan State have become more frequent of late. A man from Simaw Village in Kyaukphyu Township was arrested on Saturday and is being held at Danyawaddy naval base.

The regime has arrested and prosecuted hundreds of Arakan State residents since renewed fighting broke out in November.

The regime arrested 471 civilians in Arakan State from November 13 to March 21, according to the Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Office of the Arakan Army.
