Violence, human rights violations and massacres committed against civilians by the military junta are escalating across Myanmar.
Precise and practical action is urgently needed to end such acts of violence by the military junta, the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) said.
According to a statement released by the BWU on September 4, 55 women were killed in August due to military junta airstrikes, heavy artillery shelling, gunfire and landmine hazards, including six underage children.
As the military junta is directly targeting civilians, women and children are suffering the most, making effective action necessary to address violence against innocent civilians during the conflict, said Ma Yin Myo Hlaing, Joint General Secretary 1 of the BWU.
“To prevent further loss of innocent civilian lives and to achieve the democracy we desire, we want a transition with less conflict and violence. A mechanism that can fully ensure accountability and responsibility for victims of violence needs to emerge. Additionally, I want to emphasize that implementation is required to bring about justice,” she explained.
The BWU reported that it is collecting and publishing evidence to secure justice for victims of violence, as well as providing emergency relief support such as healthcare and food assistance and connecting victims with mental health support providers.
According to the BWU statement, female fatalities in August included 17 in Arakan State, 13 in Sagaing Region, nine in Chin State, six in Magway Region, three each in Bago Region and Karenni State, two in Kayin State, and one each in Mandalay and Tanintharyi regions.
Female deaths in August were highest in Arakan State, with 17 fatalities, while Sagaing Region recorded the second-highest number, with 13 fatalities, according to the BWU statement.
Human rights activists have strongly condemned the military junta, which is suffering military defeats and continuing attacks on civilian residential areas using its aerial advantage.
“I want the international community to take effective action against the military regime that is committing crimes, violating human rights and breaching the Geneva Conventions. Furthermore, I want action taken so that they quickly face justice before the ICC and ICJ in accordance with their crimes,” said U Myat Tun, Director of the Arakan Human Rights Defenders and Promoters Association (AHRDPA).
From January to July 2026, junta air and ground attacks resulted in 358 female deaths and 351 injuries across Myanmar, according to records from the BWU.
