Junta and Arakan Army (AA) troops clashed near Kanpyintharzi Village in Maungdaw Township on Wednesday morning.
The AA reportedly pursued a contingent of junta troops after they refused to surrender. Five junta soldiers were killed and others were injured, according to the AA. The ethnic Arakanese armed group said it would continue to attack junta forces that refuse to surrender.
The AA also ambushed a junta convoy heading from Buthidaung town to Maungdaw town on Wednesday morning. The convoy was attacked near the 6th mile checkpoint in Maungdaw, with fighting lasting more than 10 minutes, said residents.
“I heard the convoy consisted of three vehicles, and only one of them could proceed to Maungdaw. I heard loud explosions and gunfire,” said a Maungdaw resident.
Locals believe the convoy was transporting junta reinforcements to Maungdaw.
“We don’t know what was inside the vehicles. However, there were many junta soldiers on board. So, I think they are reinforcements,” said a Buthidaung resident.
DMG was unable to obtain comment from the junta’s Arakan State security and border affairs minister, Colonel Kyaw Thura, regarding the AA attacks.
The AA also said 14 junta soldiers were killed in fighting near Thinbaw Hla Village, northern Maungdaw Township, on Monday, with one junta soldier captured and some weapons seized.
