The Arakan Army (AA) is continuing to attack junta positions in Arakan State’s Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships, the ethnic armed group said in a statement on Wednesday.
Since Monday, the AA has been fighting to overrun Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 564 under the Buthidaung-based 15th Military Operations Command.
Buthidaung is a garrison town where eight different light infantry battalions under the 15th Military Operations Command, three infantry battalions and one artillery battalion are based.
The AA seized the outpost of Light Infantry Battalion No. 552 on March 25, and has been attacking to seize others in the days since.
It has also, since February 9, been attacking the Kyein Chaung border guard police outpost in the north of Maungdaw Township. The regime has brought in air and artillery support to defend the outpost.
The AA seized the Tamanthar police station in Maungdaw on March 25. Approximately 100 junta soldiers who were deployed at the police station surrendered to the AA.
Since launching its initial offensive on November 13, the AA has seized large swaths of Arakan State’s Rathedaung, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Pauktaw, Myebon and Ramree townships, and Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State.
