At least 15 people are dead and 27 others were injured after the regime bombed a Buddhist monastery in a Magway Region village where locals were meeting on May 9, Myanmar’s parallel National Unity Government (NUG) said in a statement.
Among the deceased were eight men and seven women and 27 people — 21 men and six women — were injured in the junta airstrike, the statement added.
“A junta jet fighter dropped two 250-lb bombs and two cluster bombs and unleashed machine-gun fire on a Buddhist monastery in Akyi Panpalun Village where local people and resistance fighters were holding a meeting,” the NUG’s Human Rights Ministry said in the statement.
“The Buddhist monastery was reduced to ashes and 15 people were killed in the junta airstrike. The corpses were burnt so badly that they couldn’t identify who they were,” the NUG said.
The NUG said that it will take full responsibility for taking action against the military regime, holding firmly to the goals of achieving equality, peace and justice for all Myanmar people.
The military regime, which has faced defeat after military defeat in Arakan State, is increasingly targeting towns and villages, causing civilian casualties to rise steadily in recent months.
