A junta airstrike on Kinchaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, where fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) is escalating, killed three people and wounded five others on Tuesday afternoon.
Bo Kyaw, 34, and two women were killed on the spot, and Daw Aye Nu Myaing, 50, her daughters Ma Cho Cho Win, 28 and Ma Nwe Nwe Win, 20, and two local men sustained injuries to their bodies, arms and legs.
“Junta jet fighters carry out airstrikes on a daily basis. A junta jet fighter flew over the village last night. The junta jet fighters dropped bombs on the village two times, damaging many homes,” said a local source.
Junta soldiers retreating from a Buthidaung-based battalion clashed with the AA on the Mayu mountain range road on the morning of May 14.
Six local people were injured after the junta’s Border Guard Force Battalion No. 5 fired mortar shells into 4th-Mile, Ywathayar and Ngwetaung villages on May 12. Two of the victims suffered injuries considered life-threatening and are receiving medical treatment.
“The junta fired mortar shells into the village the whole day, injuring six locals from Ywathayar and Ngwetaung villages. Some homes from other villages were damaged by the junta shellings,” said a local woman.
The AA is stepping up attacks on the junta’s BGF battalions and military camps to control the entire Maungdaw region, with the regime using artillery and warplanes to defend against the AA onslaught.
To defend against the AA advance, the regime has brought in reinforcements via the Kanyin Chaung Jetty at the border trade camp.
